Paytm: Valuing a Company With No Clean Comparable
Paytm does not fit neatly next to a bank, a payments processor or a consumer internet company. When no single peer works, valuation has to be done in parts, and in reverse.

Key takeaways
- Paytm combines payments, merchant devices and loan distribution, each with different economics.
- No listed Indian or global peer matches the whole mix.
- A sum-of-the-parts approach forces each piece to be valued on its own terms.
- A reverse DCF shows the market price needs roughly 26% to 32% annual revenue growth for a decade.
The Search for a Comparable
The easiest way to value a company is to find a similar listed company and borrow its multiple. For Paytm (One 97 Communications), that shortcut breaks down. Compare it with a global payments processor, and the economics are wrong. Compare it with a bank or NBFC, and the balance sheet is wrong. Compare it with a food delivery app, and the business is wrong.
When no single comparable fits, the honest approach is to split the company into its parts, value each on its own terms, and then check the total against what the market price implies.
A Business in Several Parts
In the June 2026 quarter (Q1 FY27), Paytm reported:
| Item | Q1 FY27 | Change from a year earlier |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | ₹2,448 crore | +28% |
| Net payment revenue | ₹601 crore | +13% |
| Financial services revenue | ₹814 crore | +45% |
| Contribution margin | 55% | |
| EBITDA | ₹203 crore | margin 8% |
| Net profit | ₹220 crore | +79% |
| Merchant GMV | ₹7.1 lakh crore | +31% |
| Merchants paying for devices | 1.57 crore | |
| Consolidated cash balance | ₹13,529 crore |

The main pieces are:
- Consumer and merchant payments. Paytm processes payments through UPI, cards and wallets. UPI person-to-merchant payments carry zero merchant discount rate (MDR) for most transactions, a policy in place since January 2020, so the payment itself earns little.
- Merchant devices. Merchants pay a monthly subscription for Soundbox and card machines. This is a steadier, recurring revenue stream.
- Online payment gateway. Paytm processes payments for online businesses as a licensed payment aggregator.
- Financial services distribution. Paytm sources loans for partner banks and NBFCs and earns fees, along with insurance and investment distribution. The lenders carry most of the credit risk on their own books.
A History That Shapes the Valuation
- November 2021: IPO at ₹2,150 a share. The stock closed its first day 27% lower.
- FY22 to FY25: Losses every year, though narrowing from ₹2,396 crore in FY22 to ₹663 crore in FY25.
- January 2024: The RBI barred Paytm Payments Bank, an associate company, from taking new deposits and most new transactions after a cutoff date in March 2024. Paytm had to move its payment flows to partner banks. Revenue fell about 31% in FY25, from ₹9,978 crore to ₹6,900 crore.
- August 2025: Ant Group, once its largest shareholder, sold its remaining stake.
- FY26: First full-year profit, ₹552 crore, on revenue of ₹8,437 crore.
So the company has only a short record of profits. Most valuation methods lean on a history that Paytm does not yet have.
Each Obvious Comparable Fails
- Global payment processors earn a fee on every transaction. Paytm earns almost nothing on the largest part of its volume, because UPI payments to most merchants carry zero MDR.
- Banks and NBFCs earn interest on loans they hold. Paytm mostly distributes loans for others and earns fees, so price-to-book does not fit.
- Consumer internet companies have very different cost structures and growth paths.
- Insurance and loan marketplaces, such as PB Fintech (Policybazaar), are closer to the financial services part, but not to payments or devices.
Each of these fits one piece and none fits the whole.
Approach 1: Sum of the Parts
A sum-of-the-parts (SOTP) valuation values each business separately and adds them up.
- Payments and devices: value on recurring contribution profit or EBITDA, with a multiple drawn from steady, fee-based businesses, adjusted for lower take rates.
- Financial services distribution: value on fee revenue or profit, compared with marketplaces and distribution businesses.
- Cash and investments: add at close to book value. At ₹13,529 crore, cash is a large share of the total.
- Subtract any value for future employee stock options and central costs that no segment carries.
The difficulty is that Paytm does not disclose profit by segment in enough detail to do this precisely. The value of the exercise is that it forces you to ask which piece the market is really paying for.
Approach 2: The Growth the Price Implies
On 19 October 2026, Paytm's market value was about ₹1.08 lakh crore. Subtracting its cash of about ₹13,500 crore gives an enterprise value of about ₹94,700 crore. Revenue over the last four quarters was about ₹8,967 crore, so the business trades at about 10.6 times trailing revenue.
Illustrative reverse DCF. Assume operating margins rise steadily from about 8% today to a target level in ten years, a 13% cost of capital, low reinvestment needs, and 6% growth after year ten. What revenue growth does the current enterprise value need?
| Operating margin reached by year 10 | Revenue growth needed each year | Revenue in year 10 |
|---|---|---|
| 20% | about 32% | about ₹1.4 lakh crore |
| 25% | about 29% | about ₹1.1 lakh crore |
| 30% | about 26% | about ₹92,000 crore |
Revenue grew 28% in the latest quarter, so the required pace is not out of reach in the near term. The question is whether it can last for ten years, at a time when the company would be many times its present size, while margins also rise to between two and a half and four times today's level.
The Variables That Matter Most
- UPI pricing. Any change to the zero MDR policy would change payment economics overnight.
- Lending partners and regulation. The financial services business depends on partner lenders' appetite and on RBI rules for digital lending.
- Competition. NPCI data show PhonePe and Google Pay handle most UPI transactions, with Paytm well behind.
- Dilution. Employee stock options have been a large cost and add shares over time.
- Use of cash. A large cash balance gives safety and choices. How it is used will shape returns.
Habits for Valuing Companies Without Peers
- Split the business into parts with different economics.
- Value each part against its own closest comparable.
- Add cash and investments separately.
- Run a reverse DCF on the whole company.
- List the variables that could change the answer most, and track them each quarter.
The Reframe
When no comparable fits, the answer is not to force one. It is to ask what the price assumes, part by part, and to decide whether those assumptions are a forecast you would make yourself.
