Roles inside a company

    Chief sustainability officer (CSO)

The senior executive who leads a company's sustainability strategy, targets and reporting.

    Background

The role is not required by law in India. Titles vary, such as Chief Sustainability Officer, Head of ESG or Chief Climate Officer.

    Scope and powers

A CSO usually coordinates emission targets, BRSR and sustainability reporting, ESG ratings responses and work with operations on safety, energy and water.

    Investor relevance

Where the CSO sits matters. One who reports to the CEO and has a say in capex decisions has more influence than one placed inside communications.
