Net zero
ESG & GovernanceA state where the greenhouse gases put into the atmosphere are balanced by the amount removed from it.
Net zero means cutting emissions as far as possible and balancing what remains with permanent removals, such as forests or technologies that capture carbon. For a country, net zero is a long-term goal: India's is 2070. For a company, a credible net zero target covers Scope 1, 2 and 3, sets interim targets, and relies mainly on real reductions rather than bought offsets. Distant targets with no plan are a common form of greenwashing.
