Global standard setters

    Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

The organisation that checks whether company emission targets are consistent with climate science.

    Background

The SBTi was set up in 2015 by CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and WWF.

    Scope and powers

The SBTi sets criteria for near-term and net zero targets and validates companies' targets against them. It published version 2 of its Corporate Net-Zero Standard in June 2026, which becomes mandatory for new targets from early 2028.

    Investor relevance

An SBTi-validated target is a common test of whether a climate pledge is credible. Check the scope coverage, base year and status (committed, validated or removed).
