The statutory body under the Ministry of Power that runs India's energy efficiency schemes and administers the carbon credit trading scheme.

    Official site

    Background

BEE was set up under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, and works under the Ministry of Power.

    Scope and powers

BEE ran the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme and now administers the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), including issuing Carbon Credit Certificates. It runs appliance star labelling and, under the CAFE III norms notified in September 2026, is a source from which carmakers can buy compliance credits.

    Investor relevance

For cement, aluminium, refining, steel and other energy-intensive companies, BEE's targets and certificate issuance determine whether carbon becomes a cost or an income.
