Double counting
ESG & GovernanceWhen the same emission reduction is claimed by more than one party, such as two companies or two countries.
Double counting can happen through double issuance (two credits for one tonne), double use (one credit claimed twice) or double claiming (a host country counts a reduction in its own target while a buyer abroad also claims it). Under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, corresponding adjustments to national accounts are used to prevent the third kind.
