Voluntary carbon market
ESG & GovernanceA market in which companies and individuals buy carbon credits by choice, usually to support climate claims.
Credits are issued under private standards such as Verra and the Gold Standard. Buyers use them for net zero, carbon neutral or climate contribution claims. The market has faced serious quality concerns, which led to integrity initiatives such as the Core Carbon Principles. The World Bank reported that credit issuances rose 8% in 2025 while prices fell slightly.
