COP (Conference of the Parties)
ESG & GovernanceThe yearly meeting of countries that are parties to the UN climate convention, where climate rules and targets are negotiated.
At each COP, countries negotiate how to implement the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement. Decisions can cover emission targets, climate finance and carbon markets. For example, COP29 in Baku agreed a framework under Article 6.4 for a UN-backed body to regulate international carbon credit trading, along with a new climate finance pledge from developed countries. COP outcomes can affect specific sectors, such as carbon credit developers and renewable energy companies.
