Downstream
ESG & GovernanceThe part of a company's value chain after its own operations, including distribution, product use and disposal.
Downstream activities include moving products to customers, how customers use them, and what happens at the end of their life. For some industries, downstream emissions dwarf everything else: a car maker's biggest emissions come from the fuel its cars burn, and an oil company's from the fuel its customers use. These fall under Scope 3 categories 9 to 15.
