Upstream
ESG & GovernanceThe part of a company's value chain before its own operations, including suppliers and raw materials.
Upstream activities include extracting raw materials, making components, transporting goods to the company and providing services it buys. Upstream ESG risks include supplier emissions (Scope 3 categories 1 to 8), forced or child labour in sourcing, and environmental damage at mines or farms. A company may have clean factories but a high-risk upstream supply chain.
