Financed emissions
ESG & GovernanceThe share of borrowers' and investees' greenhouse gas emissions that is attributed to a bank, insurer or investor that funds them.
Financed emissions fall under Scope 3 Category 15 (investments) of the GHG Protocol. For most banks and asset managers, they are far larger than their own operational emissions. The PCAF standard sets out how to calculate them: each loan or investment is multiplied by an attribution factor and by the borrower's emissions. Totals rise as lending grows, so intensity per ₹ crore lent is also useful.
