Green Credit Programme
ESG & GovernanceAn Indian scheme that awards green credits for voluntary environmental actions, such as planting trees on degraded forest land.
The programme was launched in 2023 under the Environment (Protection) Act, with ICFRE as administrator. Under the revised tree plantation method, credits are earned only after at least five years of restoration and a canopy density of at least 40%. They are not tradable, except between a holding company and its subsidiaries, and can be used once against compensatory afforestation, CSR or similar obligations. Green credits are not carbon credits.
