Marginal abatement cost curve (MACC)

    ESG & Governance

A chart that ranks options for cutting emissions by their cost per tonne, from cheapest to most expensive.

Each bar in a MACC shows one option, such as LED lighting, waste heat recovery or switching to renewable power. Its width is the tonnes it can cut, and its height is the cost per tonne. Options below zero save money. Comparing a company's MACC with the carbon price it faces shows which projects make economic sense and how much a target will cost.
