Permanence

    ESG & Governance

The test of whether carbon kept out of the atmosphere by a project will stay out over the long term.

Permanence matters most for forestry and soil projects, where fire, disease, drought or a change in land use can release the stored carbon. Standards address this with buffer pools of reserved credits and long monitoring periods. Geological storage of captured CO2 is usually seen as more permanent than storage in trees.
