Carbon removal

    ESG & Governance

Taking CO2 out of the atmosphere and storing it, through nature (such as forests and soils) or technology (such as direct air capture).

Removals are different from reductions or avoidance, which stop new emissions. Net zero requires removals to balance any emissions that cannot be cut. Nature-based removals are cheaper but can be reversed by fire or land use change. Technology-based removals with geological storage are more permanent but far more expensive. Removal credits usually sell at higher prices than avoidance credits.
