Sovereign green bond (SGrB)
ESG & GovernanceA green bond issued by a national government, with an amount equal to the proceeds allocated to eligible green public spending.
Poland issued the first sovereign green bond in 2016. India published its framework on 9 November 2022 and first issued SGrBs in January and February 2023. By FY 2026-27, India was issuing only 30-year SGrBs, through RBI auctions within the government's borrowing calendar. Most of India's allocations so far have gone to metro rail, electric locomotives and solar schemes.
