SOx (sulphur oxides)

    ESG & Governance

Air pollutants, mainly sulphur dioxide, released when fuels containing sulphur, such as coal and heavy oil, are burned.

SOx harms health and causes acid rain. Coal power plants are the largest source in India. In July 2025, the Ministry of Environment revised SO2 rules for thermal power plants: plants near the NCR and million-plus cities must comply by December 2027, plants near critically polluted areas by December 2028 or seek an exemption, and the remaining plants do not need flue gas desulphurisation if their stack heights meet the limits.
