CBDR-RC (common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities)

    ESG & Governance

The principle that all countries share responsibility for climate change, but richer, higher-emitting countries should do more.

CBDR-RC is written into the UNFCCC. It reflects the fact that developed countries have emitted most of the historical greenhouse gases and have more resources to act. India relies heavily on this principle to explain why its targets focus on emissions intensity rather than absolute cuts, and why it expects climate finance from developed countries.
