Double materiality
ESG & GovernanceTreating an issue as material if it passes either the financial materiality test or the impact materiality test.
Double materiality combines the outside-in view (how ESG issues affect the company) with the inside-out view (how the company affects people and the planet). It is the basis of the European Union's sustainability reporting rules under the CSRD and its standards, the ESRS. The ISSB standards, by contrast, use financial materiality only. Indian groups with large EU operations may need to report on a double materiality basis.
