Materiality
ESG & GovernanceThe test of whether an issue matters enough to influence decisions about a company.
In ESG, materiality decides which issues a company should manage and report on. An issue is material if it could change a reader's decision. There are several versions: financial materiality (effect on the company's value), impact materiality (the company's effect on people and the planet), double materiality (both) and dynamic materiality (how materiality changes over time). Material issues differ sharply by industry, which is why sector analysis is the starting point for any ESG work.
