Dynamic materiality
ESG & GovernanceThe idea that an issue's materiality changes over time, often moving from impact-only to financially material.
Issues do not stay in one box. An issue that only affects society today can become a direct cost tomorrow through new laws, lawsuits, technology shifts or changes in customer demand. Carbon emissions are the clearest example: long treated as an external impact, they now carry a cost in India for covered plants under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme. Analysts should watch for issues that are moving from impact to financial materiality.
