EPR (extended producer responsibility)
ESG & GovernanceA policy that makes producers responsible for collecting and recycling their products and packaging at the end of their life.
India has EPR rules for plastic packaging, electronics, batteries, waste tyres, used oil and, from 1 April 2025, end-of-life vehicles. Producers usually meet their targets by buying EPR certificates from registered recyclers or processors through Central Pollution Control Board portals, and face environmental compensation if they fall short. EPR is a growing cost line for consumer goods, electronics, battery and auto companies.
