ICMA Green Bond Principles (GBP)
ESG & GovernanceVoluntary guidelines, first published in 2014 by a group of market participants supported by the International Capital Market Association, that set the global baseline for green bonds.
The GBP have four core components: use of proceeds, the process for project evaluation and selection, management of proceeds, and reporting. They add two key recommendations: publish a green bond framework and get an external review. Sister documents cover social bonds, sustainability bonds, sustainability-linked bonds and, since November 2025, climate transition bonds. SEBI's ESG debt rules refer to ICMA's principles as a recognised standard.
