Market-based method (Scope 2)
ESG & GovernanceA way of calculating Scope 2 emissions using the emission factors of the specific electricity a company has chosen to buy, including certificates and contracts.
Under the market-based method, a company that buys renewable energy certificates or signs renewable power contracts can report lower, even zero, Scope 2 emissions. The GHG Protocol is revising the method; in September 2026 its standards board proposed a new version requiring hourly matching, deliverability within the same grid and new capacity, alongside the existing method for a transition period.
