Renewable energy certificate (REC)
ESG & GovernanceA tradable certificate representing one MWh of electricity generated from renewable sources.
RECs separate the "green" attribute of renewable power from the physical electricity. In India, they are issued under CERC regulations and traded on power exchanges; they cleared at about ₹350 to ₹370 in August 2026. Companies use them to meet renewable consumption obligations and to lower market-based Scope 2 emissions. Proposed GHG Protocol changes would limit the use of RECs bought far from where power is used.
