Payments landscape (UPI, cards, wallets)
Intuition
India has undergone one of the most dramatic digital payment transformations globally. The combination of Aadhaar-based identity infrastructure, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Jan Dhan banking accounts, and cheap mobile data created a platform for hundreds of millions of Indians to transact digitally, often leapfrogging credit cards entirely.
Understanding how money moves in India's digital ecosystem is essential for analysing fintech companies, banks' digital strategies, payment network businesses, and consumer companies whose revenue collection increasingly flows through digital rails.
The Indian payment ecosystem is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) operates most of the core infrastructure, including UPI, IMPS, RuPay, and FASTag.
Mechanics
Indian payment rails:
RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement): High-value interbank transfers (min ₹2 lakh), settled in real time. Used for large corporate payments.
NEFT (National Electronic Funds Transfer): Batch-based retail transfers, processed in half-hourly cycles, now available 24/7. No minimum amount.
IMPS (Immediate Payment Service): Real-time retail transfer via mobile (NPCI-operated). Available 24/7, any amount.
UPI (Unified Payments Interface):
- NPCI-operated overlay on IMPS rails
- Allows instant, mobile-based bank-to-bank transfer using VPA (Virtual Payment Address)
- Interoperable across banks and apps (PhonePe, GPay, BHIM, Paytm, etc.)
- P2P and P2M (merchant) use cases
- RuPay Credit Card on UPI, UPI Lite (offline/small amounts) are extensions
Card Networks: Visa, Mastercard, RuPay (NPCI's domestic network). RuPay is growing, especially on debit cards and government schemes.
Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs): Wallets and prepaid cards (Paytm Wallet, Amazon Pay). Regulated under RBI PPI Master Directions.
Payment Aggregators (PAs) and Gateways (PGs): PAs collect payments on behalf of merchants from multiple payment instruments. PGs provide the technical interface. SEBI regulates PAs for capital and compliance requirements.
