Renewable energy share
Formula
Renewable energy share
Renewable Energy Share (%) = Energy from renewable sources ÷ Total energy consumed × 100
Variables
| Energy from renewable sources | Renewable electricity, fuel and other renewable energy consumed, in gigajoules |
| Total energy consumed | All energy consumed from renewable and non-renewable sources, in gigajoules |
Finding the inputs
BRSR Principle 6 splits energy into renewable and non-renewable sources (a BRSR Core indicator). Some companies also report the renewable share of electricity alone.
Reading the number
Separate two figures: the renewable share of total energy, and the renewable share of electricity. Many industrial companies use far more energy as fuel than as electricity, so a high renewable electricity share can still mean a low renewable share of total energy. Also check how renewable electricity was obtained: own plants and direct contracts are stronger evidence than unbundled certificates.
