Energy intensity
Formula
Energy intensity
Energy Intensity = Total energy consumed ÷ Revenue from operations (₹ crore), or ÷ Units of output
Variables
| Total energy consumed | All energy consumed in the year, in gigajoules |
| Revenue from operations | Revenue for the same year and boundary, in ₹ crore |
| Units of output | Physical production for the year, where available |
Finding the inputs
Total energy is in BRSR Principle 6. Revenue is in the statement of profit and loss; production volumes are in the management discussion or investor presentations.
Reading the number
A falling energy intensity usually means better efficiency. The output-based version is more reliable for comparing companies in the same sector, because the revenue-based version moves with prices. Check the units: 1 MWh equals 3.6 GJ, and 1 tonne of oil equivalent equals 41.868 GJ.
