Total recordable injury rate (TRIR)
Formula
Total recordable injury rate (TRIR)
TRIR = (Number of recordable injuries × 2,00,000) ÷ Total hours worked
Variables
| Recordable injuries | Work-related injuries needing more than first aid, including lost time cases, restricted work and medical treatment cases |
| Total hours worked | All hours worked by the group in the year |
| 2,00,000 | Hours worked by about 100 full-time workers in a year, the base used in US practice |
Finding the inputs
The BRSR reports total recordable work-related injuries in Principle 3, but usually not hours worked. Some companies report TRIR in sustainability reports. Check the base (2,00,000 or 10,00,000 hours) before comparing.
Reading the number
TRIR captures more injuries than LTIFR, so it is usually higher and gives a fuller picture of safety. A falling LTIFR with a steady or rising TRIR may mean injuries are being reclassified as less serious.
