Employee turnover rate
Formula
Employee turnover rate
Turnover Rate (%) = Number of people who left during the year ÷ ((Headcount at start of year + Headcount at end of year) ÷ 2) × 100
Variables
| Number of people who left | Permanent employees (or workers) who left for any reason during the year |
| Headcount at start and end of year | Permanent employees (or workers) on the first and last day of the year |
Finding the inputs
The BRSR reports turnover rates for permanent employees and workers, by gender, for the current and two previous years in Section A. Headcounts are in the same section.
Reading the number
High turnover raises hiring and training costs and can signal problems with pay, culture or management. Normal levels differ by sector: IT services and retail run higher than utilities or heavy industry. Compare with peers over the same period, and look at the gender split, since a much higher rate for women can point to retention problems.
