Additionality (impact investing)
ESG & GovernanceThe extent to which an investment causes impact that would not have happened without it.
Strong additionality comes from providing capital that is not otherwise available, taking risks others will not, or changing a company's behaviour through engagement. Buying existing listed shares from another investor usually adds little. This is a different idea from additionality in carbon credits, which asks whether an emission cut would have happened without the credit revenue.
