Waste recovery rate
Formula
Waste recovery rate
Waste Recovery Rate (%) = Waste recovered (recycled + reused + other recovery) ÷ Total waste generated × 100
Variables
| Waste recovered | Tonnes of waste recycled, reused or recovered through other operations in the year |
| Total waste generated | Tonnes of all waste generated in the year, hazardous and non-hazardous |
Finding the inputs
BRSR Principle 6 reports waste generated by type and waste recovered or disposed of by method; these are BRSR Core indicators under "embracing circularity".
Reading the number
A higher rate means more waste is kept out of landfill and incineration. Read it alongside the total amount of waste and waste intensity: a company can raise its recovery rate while generating more waste overall. Check whether hazardous waste is reported separately, because its handling carries more regulatory risk.
