Water intensity
Formula
Water intensity
Water Intensity = Total water consumption ÷ Revenue from operations (₹ crore), or ÷ Units of output
Variables
| Total water consumption | Water consumed in the year, in kilolitres (withdrawal minus discharge) |
| Revenue from operations | Revenue for the same year and boundary, in ₹ crore |
| Units of output | Physical production for the year, where available |
Finding the inputs
Water withdrawal, consumption and discharge are in BRSR Principle 6; water consumption and intensity are BRSR Core indicators. Leadership indicators may give figures for water-stressed areas.
Reading the number
Water intensity matters most for water-heavy sectors such as beverages, textiles, power, paper and chemicals. A company-level figure can hide large differences between plants, so look for site-level data in water-stressed areas. Use consumption rather than withdrawal where possible, because it shows the water actually lost to the local system.
