Sector map: pharmaceuticals
Intuition
A pharmaceutical company's licence to sell depends on regulators trusting its factories. A failed inspection can block exports to the US or Europe for months. Unsafe or substandard medicines can kill patients and destroy a brand. So manufacturing quality is the most material ESG issue in the sector. Close behind are ethical marketing to doctors, safe handling of chemical and antibiotic waste, and access and pricing in a market where many medicines are price-controlled.

Indian rules to know
- Revised Schedule M: updated good manufacturing practice rules under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules. Micro and small firms with turnover below ₹250 crore had until 31 December 2025 to comply, after an extension. Only about one in four such units was expected to be ready by the deadline.
- UCPMP 2024: the Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices, notified on 12 March 2024, bars companies and their agents from giving gifts, cash grants or travel facilities to doctors and their families, including travel to conferences and seminars.
